Low-Carb Alternatives

Using veggie noodles, cauliflower rice and other flavour-packed ingredients can make low-carb eating a breeze. Cutting down on sugar and highly refined carbohydrates is beneficial to your health, and some people go even a little further by following the low-carb lifestyle that’s been in vogue in recent years.

While carbohydrates are a hearty and valuable energy source the body needs to operate at full tilt, more of us are increasingly choosing to go without carbs -  either completely, or now and again in pursuit of health benefits.

If you’re considering cutting down on refined carbs, read on for some top tips on the most delicious and convenient low-carb alternatives for your carb-heavy favourites (all without feeling like you are missing out)!

Crunchy Cos Lettuce

These lean and green leaves are a creative and crunchy replacement for taco shells and soft wraps. Not only are they carb free, but they are also one of the lowest-calorie dishes in the world! You can also use iceberg or gem lettuce to make ‘cups’ for holding a variety of tasty ingredients. We recommend a Chilli Con Carne filling if you like a spicy bite, or alternatively Pulled Pork, or a tasty Bolognese sauce.

Marvellous Mushrooms

When it comes to beautiful-tasting hamburgers, skip the buns and replace them with plump Portobello or field mushrooms instead. Filled with plenty of vitamins and minerals (including B Vitamins and copper) they’re a great earthy-tasting alternative to burger buns. Be sure to bake or fry the mushrooms first with plenty of olive oil and crushed garlic, plus a sprinkle of salt and a crack of pepper.

Top tip: Make sure you buy the biggest mushrooms you can find as you’re going to want to stuff them full of terrific toppings.

Beautiful Butternut

Looking for an alternative to the trusted spud? Replace those delicious potato chips with butternut chips.  Crispy on the outside and soft and sweet within, these fabulous ‘fries’ have fewer carbs than potatoes and are filled with Vitamin A.  Simply cut them into sticks or wedges, drizzle them with olive oil, sprinkle them with salt, whack them in the oven and tuck in.

Vegetable Noodles

The latest and greatest health craze to hit homes around the country, vegetable noodles are a nutritious low-carb alternative. They’re also really easy to make at home. What you’ll need is a baby marrow or butternut, a spiraliser, and a KNORR pasta sauce of your choice. Vegetable noodles cook very quickly in boiling water, or you can stir-fry them in a little olive oil, garlic and ginger – now that sounds delicious!
